Ennis Golf Club has been part of the sporting and social life of County Clare for over a century.
Ennis Golf Club was founded in 1907 at a time when organised golf was beginning to take hold across Ireland. The original course layout was modest by today’s standards, but it quickly established a reputation as a challenging and enjoyable test of golf.
From the outset, the club served as a social gathering point as well as a sporting one, drawing members from Ennis town and the surrounding countryside.
As the club’s membership grew, so too did the course and facilities. Over the decades, Ennis Golf Club expanded and refined its layout, responding to changes in the game while preserving the character of a traditional parkland course.

Ennis Golf Club is one of County Clare’s most established sporting institutions, with a proud history that stretches back to 1907. For more than a century, the club has been an integral part of the local community, offering members and visitors alike a golfing experience that blends tradition, challenge and hospitality.
Golf had been played in the Ennis area prior to the club’s formal establishment, but it was in 1907 that Ennis Golf Club was firmly founded and organised. From the outset, the club was notable for its progressive outlook, with both men and women involved in its membership and administration at a time when this was far from common.
The original course was a 9-hole inland layout, located close to Ennis town, making it easily accessible to members travelling by rail or on foot.
In 1915, the club relocated to its present home at Drumbiggle, just outside Ennis. This move marked a defining moment in the club’s development, providing the space and landscape needed to create a more expansive and enduring course.
Over time, the course evolved into a full 18-hole parkland layout, completed in 1951, with gently undulating fairways, mature trees and well-designed greens that continue to test and reward golfers of all standards.
Throughout the decades, Ennis Golf Club has invested steadily in course improvements, drainage, and maintenance, ensuring excellent playing conditions throughout the year. These enhancements have allowed the course to retain its classic parkland character while meeting the expectations of the modern golfer.
A major milestone in the club’s more recent history was the opening of the new clubhouse in 1999. Designed to enhance both the sporting and social aspects of the club, the clubhouse offers modern locker rooms, dining and bar facilities, a professional shop, and panoramic views across the course.
Today, it serves as the heart of the club — a place where members gather, visitors are welcomed, and lifelong friendships are formed.
Ennis Golf Club has always placed great value on camaraderie, inclusivity and sporting excellence. With a full programme of competitions, active men’s and ladies’ sections, and a welcoming approach to visitors, the club continues to thrive while remaining true to the principles established over a century ago.
More than 100 years on, Ennis Golf Club proudly combines its rich heritage with a forward-looking vision, offering an exceptional golfing experience in the heart of County Clare.
